I discovered this guy's website today - thanks to Snarkmarket. Frank Chimero is a designer and illustrator. In his FAQ, he writes this:
When did you feel like you found your design "nitch"—what clues were you listening for?
It was there when I made something and my shoulders dropped. My ideal state is when I’m in the middle of working on something and it excites me so much I have to get up while working on it. I sit back down, make a mark, look again, have to get back up and pace. I fidget and force myself to sit down again and make another mark. Repeat. Some times I just get so excited with something I’m making each progressive mark gets harder because I’m so busy racing around the room.
I know exactly what he is talking about. I have found myself high-fiving the air, poppin' my collar and other strange behavior when that lightbulb goes off. What an exceptional feeling to know that you know that you know you are on to something. When the peak experience surprises even the creator is a wonderful thing.
